RUAG delivers the one-stop shop



It is no longer enough to be ‘just a maintenance and repair organization’. Today, the successful MRO providers for business aviation have to meet increasingly demanding customer expectations – something that RUAG believes it has a significant edge over its competitors on.

With its roots in many decades of providing support for the Swiss Air Force, RUAG Aviation has grown to be a worldwide leader. Today, the company brings Swiss precision to civil aviation with bases not only in Switzerland, but also in Germany, Australia, North America and Malaysia. Apart from full MRO services, RUAG’s capabilities even includes production of the Dornier Do.228 local service airliner.

In Munich, time is always of essence

FlyCorporate recently visited RUAG at its main base at Oberpfaffenhofen, just outside Munich. However, the company also has seven other MRO locations in Europe, including Geneva, where it operates an authorized service center for Dassault business jets; Alpnach and Sion, which cater to Airbus Helicopter clients; the Berne service center that specializes in Cessna Citations, Twin Otters and the Pilatus PC-12; and Lugano and Lodrino, which cater to several types and are Piaggio Avanti and Piper Meridian authorized service centers.

RUAG’s Munich facility is an authorized service center for Bombardier (from the Challenger 300 up to Global 6000), Embraer Executive Jets (Legacy 600/650 and Lineage 1000) and Gulfstream (large cabin aircraft). As the heart of the company’s business aviation services, the facility features a very large integrated triple hangar complex. This includes dedicated hangars for Bombardier and Embraer, along with a painting hangar capable of handling three or four large business jets at a time.

During our visit, the paint hangar was occupied by a Bombardier Learjet 55, a Dornier 228, and a Gulfstream G450. According to Imhoff, the G450 will be in Munich for just 15 days for a full strip and paint, with the RUAG team working two shifts to get the job done on time.

A 360 degree advantage

Although the market is tough and very competitive, the company succeeds by being able to do things differently. What differentiates RUAG is the company’s focus on competitive pricing, minimum downtime and being a ‘one-stop-shop’, made possible by all required capabilities being available in house.

Apart from full maintenance and overhauls, the Munich location also handles the design and manufacturing of demanding interior re-fits. One Bombardier Challenger 604, in for a 10-year check, was receiving a complete interior refurbishment and upgrades to its avionics and cabin systems while FlyCorporate was there.
